Lango is inspired by the calango, a small and resilient lizard commonly found in Brazil’s sertão. Naturally, these lizards blend into their environment — which works great in nature, but not in a game.

The challenge was to stay true to the animal while making the character readable, expressive, and instantly recognizable on screen.
Finding the Shape

I started by studying the calango’s anatomy — long torso, flexible tail, low stance, and quick limb movement. Early explorations focused on capturing that silhouette while simplifying forms for clarity.

The body became the main storytelling element. I intentionally reduced detail in the limbs and shifted the focus to the torso and tail, where most of the motion and personality would live.
Color Exploration

Real calangos are masters of camouflage. For Lango, I pushed the palette in the opposite direction.

I explored gradients and segmented color blocks to:

Improve visibility against the environment
Emphasize movement across the body
Add a playful tone to the character

The final palette transitions from warm earthy tones to vibrant greens and blues — a subtle nod to the sertão, but with enough contrast to stand out during gameplay.
Personality & Expression

Lango needed to feel tenacious and a bit scrappy.

I experimented with different head shapes, eye placements, and proportions to find the right balance between charm and determination. The final design leans slightly stylized, with a friendly face that still holds up during fast-paced action.
Simplification for Motion

Since all animations would be hand-drawn, efficiency mattered.

I simplified the arms into minimal, almost stick-like forms. This allowed me to:

  ✔  Keep the animation process lean 
  ✔  Avoid unnecessary visual noise
  ✔  Focus attention on the body’s movement

Every design decision here was made with animation in mind.
Final Design

Lango is a balance between observation and interpretation — grounded in real anatomy, but shaped for clarity, motion, and personality.
